Positive Life Group@Positive East – screening of ‘BROS B4 HO’S’
Tuesday 25th April, 2017
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
159 Mile End Road
For the next Positive Life group meeting, there will be a screening of ‘BROS B4 HO’S’, a documentary about South Africa’s first ever Drag King Troupe, challenging gender norms in this insightful film.
Never before has the world of female masculinity been so intimately explored as in this documentary of South Africa’s first ever Drag King troupe. On the 6 May 2012, Catherine Saint Jude Pretorius called a meeting at her house to discuss the formation of a Drag King troupe. Just three months later, BROS B4 HO’S performed their first sold-out show. Set in scenic, eclectic Cape Town, the documentary follows 6 amazing women as they explore their gender identity and perform their own unique personae together. The film explores the concept of gender as being socially constructed, and show just how malleable gender really is. Each from different backgrounds and choosing to do drag for different reasons, the women learn to share and express a part of themselves that society most often condemns.
The film will be shown downstairs in the Tom Halford room. You are still more than welcome to come for the evening and just join the others, upstairs in the café area, who prefer the mutual support and social aspect of the evening.
The film run time is 50 minutes, starting 6.30pm prompt, there will then be some dinner for all attending afterwards.
Please contact Andre (email; email@example.com) to confirm your attendance to ensure sufficient catering.
