Survivors! A portrait exhibition @City Hall

This portrait exhibition in the Lower Ground Floor at City Hall opens weekdays (8.30am to 6pm, Friday 5.30pm) from 4th December 2017 to 5th January 2018.

These portraits have been commissioned to mark World AIDS Day 2017, and as a part of the AIDS Since the 80s project. Each subject is a survivor of HIV. These are portraits that invite the viewer to re-imagine what it is to survive. Here can be found traces of a challenging history but also undeniable dignity. This is the first UK solo exhibition by the celebrated Antwerp based artist Danielle van Zadelhoff.

The portraits are a selection of people who have given in depth interviews to the AIDS Since the 80s project. The project will release a feature film in 2018. The interviews are to be donated to the London Metropolitan Archives. This invaluable resource is the largest ever collection of interviews detailing the impact of HIV in the UK, and a will be a key LGBT historical resource.

We are delighted that this exhibition is supported by the Mayor of London.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “As Mayor and Chair of the London Health Board, I have made HIV prevention a top priority. As a result of the Do It London programme and a concerted effort across the city, we’ve seen HIV diagnosis rates fall for the first time in a generation. But there remains much more to do.

“This important exhibition highlights the journey of those living with HIV and the journey the UK has been on as a whole – from the hard-hitting and powerful public information campaigns of the 80s to the huge progress made in treatment today. It’s vital that their stories are told and acknowledged as we redouble our efforts to ensure that HIV and AIDS are, one day, a thing of the past.”
